Following President Trump’s Coronavirus Guidelines for America, Lake Amistad has been closed to the public.

According to the National Park Service website, the announcement was made in compliance with the guidelines that are aimed at slowing the spread of the virus.

The closure targets includes all events, recreational areas and picnic areas. Officers will enforce the closure.

"Due to groups with more than 10 people frequenting the picnic areas in violation of the coronavirus guidance and ordinances, all picnic areas are closed until further notice,"  NPS said.

Officials will continue to monitor the evolving situation to determine if an extended closure is necessary.

Superintendent Chris Ryan said he applauds this approach to be "proactive and take precautionary measures to attempt to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in Del Rio and Val Verde County."

As of April 5, Texas reported 6,812 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 127 deaths. Val Verde County has five confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Val Verde County Judge Lewis Owens recently declared the coronavirus to be a local disaster for the county. The judge has ordered the residents living within the county to shelter in place in their homes until 11:59 p.m. on April 6, 2020.

County leaders are reviewing the growing situation to determine if the declaration needs to be extended.

“It's changed our lives just like it has everybody else,” Owens told Kens5 News. "I think the issues that we're facing here...we are sort of far away from everything.”
