Representative Chip Roy of Texas has expressed his opposition to what he describes as a "radical progressive Democrats’ efforts" to influence the federal court system. On Tuesday, Rep. Roy sent a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, thanking him for his collaboration in resisting these efforts.
Rep. Roy claims that the Judicial Conference is attempting an ideological power grab by trying to prevent single-judge divisions from hearing certain cases. He argues this move would undermine states' abilities to challenge federal government actions in court and urges the House Judiciary Committee to block any related legislation until the Judicial Conference changes its stance.
In his letter, Rep. Roy emphasized the importance of protecting against "unlawful left-wing activism," which he says includes attempts at court-packing or judicial rule-making that could hinder judges from performing their duties according to existing laws enacted by Congress.
He also noted his appreciation for working with Chairman Jordan and committee staff over the summer, stating their collective refusal to advance legislation supported by the Judicial Conference unless it withdraws its proposal. According to Rep. Roy, this proposal could limit states like Texas from countering federal actions negatively affecting them.
The Federalist provided additional context on this issue, reporting that earlier this year, the Judicial Conference issued advisory guidelines recommending random assignment of cases across districts. The article further suggests that recent efforts aim to make these guidelines mandatory, allegedly influenced by figures such as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and the Biden Justice Department.
