Representative Chip Roy of Texas has expressed his stance on the FY 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), known as H.R. 5009. He released a statement explaining his decision to vote against the bill.
"I voted NO on the FY 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 5009)," said Rep. Roy.
Despite acknowledging some positive aspects, such as adherence to spending caps and efforts to refocus the Pentagon's mission, Roy highlighted several issues with the legislation. He praised certain provisions, including "language banning Critical Race Theory and prohibiting taxpayer funded sex-change procedures for minors under Tricare." Additionally, he commended Speaker Johnson and House GOP leadership for resisting Senate attempts to include female draft language in the bill.
Roy criticized Democrats who opposed the bill due to its prohibition of "taxpayer-funded child mutilation," calling it indicative of their radical movement.
Ultimately, Roy could not support the final version of the NDAA because it "did not go far enough." He noted that it failed to eliminate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) positions like the Chief Diversity Officer and did not end Pentagon-funded sex-change surgeries for service members. Roy expressed his intent to continue collaborating with President Trump to enhance military readiness and effectiveness.
