On December 20, 2024, Representative Chip Roy from Texas's 21st district released a statement regarding his decision to vote against H.R. 10545. The bill is the third version of the government funding continuing resolution (CR).
Roy stated, "Today, notwithstanding significant progress over the last few days, I voted against H.R. 10545, the 3rd version of the government funding 'CR.'" He expressed concerns about the inclusion of $110 billion in supplemental funding without any offsets or pay-fors.
While acknowledging that supporting Americans affected by recent hurricanes and aiding farmers are important causes, Roy emphasized fiscal responsibility. "We must pursue those ends in a fiscally responsible way or we risk losing our country altogether," he said.
He highlighted two outcomes achieved through efforts with fellow House members known as 'fiscal hawks.' These include preventing an additional $5 trillion from being added to the national debt and providing President Trump with a strategy to prevent Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer from using the debt ceiling issue to disrupt financial markets.
Roy concluded his statement by expressing his intention to continue working with colleagues in Congress on these matters: "I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure we do just that in the 119th Congress."
