Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has announced his support for Mike Johnson as Speaker of the House in the 119th Congress. In a statement released on Friday, Roy explained his decision to vote for Johnson despite having concerns about his performance during the previous Congress.
"Today, my conservative colleagues and I voted for Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House," Roy stated. He emphasized that his vote was made "out of support and respect for President Trump and his agenda."
Roy highlighted several issues facing the country, including border security, inflationary spending, national debt, energy production challenges, and international weaknesses. He attributed President Trump's historic mandate from voters in November to these pressing issues.
According to Roy, it is now Speaker Johnson's responsibility to ensure that the House addresses every part of President Trump's agenda without delay. Following their votes for Johnson as Speaker, Roy and ten other conservative colleagues sent a letter to the House Republican Conference detailing their expectations for Johnson's leadership as he begins organizing the policy agenda for the new Congress.
Roy assured constituents in Texas' 21st District of his commitment: "To the people of Texas-21, rest assured I will do everything in my power to ensure that this chamber delivers on the truest form of President Trump’s agenda going forward."
