On Tuesday, Representative Chip Roy from Texas announced the reintroduction of a bill aimed at stopping taxpayer funds from being used to support the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The legislation reflects concerns about the council's membership and actions.

Representative Roy criticized the UNHRC, stating, “The U.N.'s 'Human Rights' Council is a long-running joke. This body has the audacity to lecture the world about human rights while giving seats to some of the worst abusers in the world — like China, Cuba and Sudan.” He further commented on what he perceives as an imbalance in how different countries are treated by the council: “Further, it disproportionately attacks our ally Israel as part of the U.N.'s overall leftist crusade against Western Civilization, while letting monstrous and authoritarian regimes like Iran get away with little more than a slap on the wrist by comparison — if that.”

The UNHRC includes nations such as China and Cuba, which have been criticized for their human rights records. According to Representative Roy's statement, these countries often escape significant scrutiny while Israel faces frequent condemnation. From 2006 to 2024, only four resolutions were passed concerning Venezuela, with similar low numbers for Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, and Syria. In contrast, Israel was condemned 108 times during this period. No resolutions targeted China or Cuba despite alleged violations against women, minorities, journalists, and political dissidents.

Representative Roy expressed his view that "this globalist anti-western propaganda machine doesn't deserve a dime of our money or an ounce of our credibility."

The bill is cosponsored by Representatives Andy Ogles from Tennessee's 5th district; David Rouzer from North Carolina's 7th district; Ben Cline from Virginia's 6th district; Diana Harshberger from Tennessee's 1st district; Andy Biggs from Arizona's 5th district; and Riley Moore from West Virginia's 2nd district.

Text of the bill is available for public viewing.
