Rep. Chip Roy of Texas issued a statement following the Budget Committee's approval of the FY25 Budget Resolution on Thursday evening. In his statement, Rep. Roy expressed reservations about the current debt crisis and Congress's ability to address it, highlighting concerns over inflation and high interest rates.
"Today I voted to report the Chairman’s FY25 Budget Resolution out of the Budget Committee," said Rep. Roy. He noted that while there are concerns, if adopted by Republicans on the House floor, the bill would represent significant spending reductions and extend President Trump's tax policies.
Roy acknowledged the challenges in reaching this point, crediting his colleagues on the Budget Committee and support from the House Freedom Caucus for pushing hard to achieve spending cuts in this resolution. "We did what members of Congress are supposed to do: we deliberated, negotiated, and legislated," he stated. He also commended Chairman Jodey Arrington for his leadership during this process.
The budget resolution aims to cut wasteful spending while maintaining low taxes, enabling $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and potentially more than $2 trillion in spending cuts over ten years. Although Rep. Roy believes further reductions could be made beyond an annual $200 billion reduction from total annual spending exceeding $7 trillion, he sees it as a step toward eliminating government waste.
The plan also seeks to remove Senate Democrats' leverage by reducing spending tied to raising the debt ceiling and sets up funding for border security, immigration enforcement, and military operations without interruption.
"The American people expect us to deliver and we have a duty to do what we said," concluded Rep. Roy regarding today's resolution as an important step forward.
