Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has expressed his support for the Trump administration's recent decision to classify several cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations (FTOs). This move is aimed at providing law enforcement with more tools to combat these groups.
"This is the right move from President Trump and Secretary Rubio," said Congressman Roy. "We need to treat these cartels like the terrorists that they truly are, and give law enforcement every possible tool to cut them down hard and fast." He further stated his commitment to enacting legislation that would prevent future presidents from reversing this policy.
The designated groups include Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha, Cartel de Sinaloa, Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion, Carteles Unidos, Cartel del Noreste, Cartel del Golfo, and La Nueva Familia Michoacana.
Rep. Roy has been active in this cause since 2019 when he first introduced legislation on the matter as a freshman congressman. His efforts have continued over the years with various bills aimed at addressing cartel-related issues.
He has consistently pushed for such designations as part of broader efforts to address security concerns related to drug cartels operating along the U.S.-Mexico border. Drone footage of cartel activities underscores the ongoing danger in these regions, according to Rep. Roy.
