Rep. Chip Roy from Texas has re-introduced the Disengaging Entirely From the United Nations Debacle (DEFUND) Act of 2025, aiming to withdraw U.S. financial support from the United Nations. Roy criticizes the organization for undermining American interests and failing in its global responsibilities.

"The United Nations has enjoyed American tax money while often undermining our interests, attacking our allies, and bolstering our adversaries," said Congressman Roy. He argues that despite significant funding, the UN has not effectively prevented conflicts or human rights abuses.

Roy also highlighted specific criticisms: "Rather, from its support of terrorism through UNRWA, to parroting CCP talking points during COVID at the WHO, to the Orwellian agenda of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), to the Israel-hating UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), it’s clear the UN and its bodies do not advance the interests of the American people."

Senator Mike Lee supports this initiative, stating, "The United Nations has devolved into a platform for tyrants and a venue to attack America and her allies. We should stop paying for it." He emphasized a shift towards alliances that prioritize U.S. safety and prosperity.

The bill is co-sponsored by several representatives including Mike Rogers, Eli Crane, Diana Harshbarger, Anna Paulina Luna, Harriett Hageman, Josh Brecheen, Thomas Massie, and Marjorie Taylor Greene. In the Senate, Marsha Blackburn is a co-sponsor.
