Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has issued a statement following the House of Representatives' passage of the fiscal year 2025 budget resolution. The resolution, passed on Tuesday evening, addresses issues related to mandatory spending and tax cuts.
In his statement, Congressman Roy described the event as "historic," highlighting that Congress is acknowledging its spending problems. He noted, "For the first time in my memory, we forced the House to admit it must cut overall spending to address the 'inflation tax' crushing the dreams of every hardworking American family and young adult."
The resolution establishes a $1.5 trillion reduction in mandatory spending, targeting reforms in Medicaid, food stamps, and other programs with issues such as waste and fraud. Roy emphasized that further reductions are necessary to decrease deficits effectively.
The budget also includes provisions for extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts while linking any additional tax relief to further spending reductions. According to Roy, maintaining this connection is essential for reducing deficits.
Roy also mentioned expectations for Congress regarding efforts by DOGE (Department Of Government Efficiency) to manage excessive spending: "DOGE shouldn’t just be a tool to expose bad contracts or for Republicans to fundraise on—it should drive and motivate Congress to shrink the size and scope of the federal government."
His support was contingent on several actions in a final reconciliation bill. These include freezing discretionary spending with future emergency considerations, eliminating Green New Deal IRA subsidies, and ending President Joe Biden's student loan bailout.
"We took one necessary step, but there are many miles to go," said Roy. He concluded by emphasizing that while this budget sets a framework for results, it will only deliver if acted upon: "But only if we deliver."
