Wes Virdell, a Republican member of the Texas State House representing District 53, has used his social media platform to voice strong opinions on property rights and government action. In a series of posts between September 14 and September 16, 2025, Virdell discussed eminent domain and landowner rights.
On September 14, Virdell expressed agreement with an unnamed individual in a brief post: “I don’t know who this patriot is, but I agree with him! https://t.co/V4WWLolrL4”.
He expanded on his position two days later, posting: “Here is the short version – Eminent domain is immoral and landowners should exhaust all options available to include defending their property from all transgressors foreign and domestic. Here is the longer version – A moral government has laws to protect citizens and their” (September 16).
In a follow-up tweet shortly after, Virdell continued: “Part 2 – The government has other options, but it doesn’t seem interested in those options. One option is to utilize the free market and negotiate with landowners. I have seen it done in practice with another large power line and …for the most part… people didn’t seem to” (September 16).
Virdell was elected to the Texas State House in 2025 for District 53, succeeding Andrew Murr. As a newly elected representative, his statements reflect ongoing debates within Texas regarding eminent domain—the process by which governments can compel private landowners to sell property for public use—and broader concerns about governmental overreach into private property rights.
