Cost of college went up for all students at Southwest Texas Junior College

In-state tuition and fees rose 3.8 percent for 2018-19 at Southwest Texas Junior College, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Texas residents paid $3,942 to attend the two-year public institution this year – $144 more than the $3,798 charged for 2017-18.

Non-resident students would have paid 56.5 percent more than residents this year, or $6,170. Non-resident tuition and fees grew 15.2 percent from $5,356 in 2017-18.

About 98 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Texas residents. And about 2 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 82 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 478 students received grants or scholarships totaling $2.8 million and 54 students took out student loans totaling more than $228,328.

Including all undergraduates (6,894), 2,868 students used grants or scholarships totaling $16.2 million, and 419 students took out $2.4 million in federal student loans.
