WASHINGTON, DC — On May 23, Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) attended the sentencing hearing for two cartel members who were found guilty of murder in killing ICE Special Agent Jaime Zapata and attempting to murder ICE Special Agent Victor Avila twelve years ago.

“I was thankful to be able to attend the sentencing hearing and to hear the compelling testimony from Jaime’s brother, Victor Avila, and Assistant U.S. Attorney, Karen Seifert for ably representing the United States today,” after the hearing, Representative Roy said. “Justice was once again served with the restoration of life sentences for these heinous cartel murderers. Rest in Peace, Jaime.”

In 2011, ICE Special Agents Jaime Zapata and Victor Avila were ambushed by members of Los Zetas Cartel while on an official assignment near San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Agent Zapata was killed in the attack, and Agent Avila survived multiple gunshot wounds.

The two defendants from today’s hearing are among the nine cartel members implicated in the attack. Both cartel members were given a life sentence plus 20 years, and 33 years for conspiracy.
