Rep. Chip Roy from Texas has reintroduced two legislative bills aimed at enhancing the welfare and safeguarding the rights of U.S. veterans. The announcement was made on Tuesday.
The first bill, known as the Veteran Access to Direct Primary Care Act, proposes a pilot program that would allow veterans to enroll in Direct Primary Care (DPC) arrangements. This initiative is designed to enable veterans to bypass bureaucratic processes at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Commenting on this act, Congressman Roy stated: “It’s a sad fact that our veterans return home after defending our nation, only to be forced to cut through thick red tape to get the care and benefits they have earned. I am proud to stand up for our heroes and lead the effort to give them the freedom to access healthcare that prioritizes patients, like direct primary care. Veterans should have access to the care that best fits their needs, whether that is within the VA or in the community.”
The second piece of legislation is titled the Defending Veterans' Second Amendments Rights Act. This bill aims to protect veterans' Second Amendment rights when they seek mental health care from the VA.
Congressman Roy expressed concerns about current practices: “Today, veterans fear losing their right to bear arms. When a veteran seeks care for mental health issues at the VA and receives a disability rating for having a mental illness, the Department of Veterans Affairs transfers their personal information to the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System. No veteran should fear losing the rights that they have defended for simply seeking help.”
Representative Eli Crane from Arizona is among those co-sponsoring the Veteran Access to Direct Primary Care Act.
