Rep. Chip Roy of Texas has reintroduced the Passport Sanity Act, a piece of legislation aimed at eliminating what he describes as "radical gender ideology" from United States passports. The bill seeks to ensure that all passports, passport cards, and Consular Reports of Birth Abroad issued by the Secretary of State contain only male or female gender designations.
Roy stated, “Radical gender ideology must be eliminated from every facet of the American government, root and branch. Passports exist to protect our national security by verifying the identity of those who exit and reenter our country, and that's why they need to be grounded in reality. They are not a political delivery system to push a false notion that goes against the fact that the only two genders in existence are male and female."
He further noted that this initiative aligns with actions taken by President Trump and Secretary Rubio, asserting that they have "rightly restored sanity to America's passports as part of this administration's revolution of common sense." Roy emphasized the importance for Congress to support these changes by codifying them into law permanently.
The act would specifically prohibit any unspecified (X) gender designation on relevant documents, limiting options strictly to male or female.
